Rules

Please read the entire page to understand how to apply, who is eligible, and what is expected of Students and Teachers. 

All 9-12 grade students from private, parochial, home schooled, and public schools in Arizona are invited to apply to participate in the 2008 Arizona Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. Participants may attend as Observers, Oral Presenters, or, Poster Presenters. Teachers/Chaperones must accompany students.

Oral Presenters must be US citizens or permanent resident.

Student Participants. Based on the content and quality of their papers (please visit the National JSHS website for specific format of papers that you must adhere to), oral presenters will be selected to present at the regional event. The following is a breakdown of Symposium attendees:

  • 25 - 30 students will be selected to attend as regional symposium Oral Presenters. Oral Presenters will be required to do a 12 minute oral presentation, with 3-5 minutes remaining for discussion. Oral Presenters will participate in workshops and present. Oral Presenters at the AZJSHS will be competing for 3 tuition scholarships ($2000, $1500, $1000). The top two winners will have an opportunity to present and compete for additional scholarships in the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium to be held in Orlando, Florida in May 2007. For more information regarding scholarships or the National Competition, please go to the National Website.  The top 5 AZJSHS students will be invited to attend the National Competition. Cost for food, housing and transportation to the National JSHS is provided by the Academy of Applied Science. Students must stay for both days at the regional event and if you are a regional scholarship winner, you must be committed to attend the National event if they are an oral presenter.  

  • Approximately 75 additional students will be invited to attend the regional symposium as Observers and Poster Presenters. There will be cultural events, tours, student presentations, and an opening reception as well as an awards ceremony. Students must stay for both days.

Students must be nominated by a teacher, mentor or adult to participate as oral presenters. Students will need to discuss attending the symposium with the principal and science teacher from their school. Teachers are invited to attend the symposium but it is not mandatory. Teachers may also nominate other students to attend as observers or poster presenters, especially those who wish to gain experience for future regional symposia. Students that wish to attend as observers or poster presenters may attend without teacher nomination. Students must have an adult chaperone to attend any portion of the event. If the teacher or mentor cannot attend, they should make arrangements for a chaperone.

The AZJSHS will provide for hotel cost and food for two days of the event to all students and their chaperones. In case you prefer not to take advantage of the hotel accommodations, you must indicate this on the registration form.

There are no pre-approval forms for experimentation; however, students and teachers should visit the National JSHS website to see what type of research is acceptable.

Students Must be Nominated by a teacher or mentor to paticipate as an oral presenter. If a teacher/mentor is not available to nominate a student, you must contact our office by Friday Febrauary 29, via e-mail or phone at 480-965-6560 and we will guide you through the forms needed for the registration.
